Thank you so much for visiting my blog. It’s been a joy writing here, and I am dedicating time this year to contribute more often. In this post, I’d like to offer some tips for using Reiki for career enhancement
In the last 2 years, I have made two transitions in my career. They were both fortunate transitions with great outcomes. Prior to my interview, like any, I experienced a lot of anxiety. Despite having been a doctor that has worked for over a decade in my career, I still get very nervous before and during interviews.
This is where the Distant Symbol, or Hon She Ze Sho Nen, steps in. I have made it a habit to spend at least a 30 minute session of sending Reiki to the interview. If there are other aspects of the interview I’m worried about, such as travel or being on time, I send Reiki to that. I will also make a note to myself to convert worry thoughts about the upcoming interview into Reiki.
I found that in both very stressful events, I felt a sense of calm before, during and after the interviews. I also found that little stressors, such as traffic, or getting lost, did not seem to happen. The result of both these interviews is that I was able to get the position I desired. I feel that even if I had not gotten the jobs, I had a wonderful experience.
If you are not a Reiki practitioner, you can send good thoughts, intentions, or prayers to interviews, meetings, or any event. The idea is that rather than worry, you send good energy that is more beneficial.
Reiki has so many wonderful applications. One of my favorites is the World Peace Meditation created by William Rand. Please see this link for details, history of the World Peace Meditation, as well as the handy crystal grids that you can download and print to use during the meditation.
The premise of the World Peace Meditation is that if as many of us as possible focus healing energy on the entire world, a wave of healing will be created. Anyone can participate in this event, ideally you can meditate for about 15 minutes at 7:30pm in your time zone.
I am taking advantage of a wonderful WordPress feature, using this future blog post as a reminder to myself as well to send healing energy and so that I will not forget myself.
After my first Reiki attunement, I had no plans of sharing Reiki with others. I soon learned, like many Reiki practitioners, that once you open yourself to Reiki, the healing energy finds you in numerous ways. One of the most interesting things that happened after each Reiki attunement was the shift in my patients. Without being prompted, patients began asking me about using energy medicine, crystals, essential oils, herbal supplements and all kinds of healing modalities to aid in their healing. Even more interesting, many of my patients began to acknowledge a sense of wanting to know more, wanting to dig deeper within themselves. The year after I became a Reiki master, many patients would share with me having a spiritual crisis at the same time as a health crisis, often relating the two without me even asking.
My own personal healing journey was brought on by a crisis on multiple levels. I went through the end of a relationship, as well as the beginning of burn out in my practice. I begin to experience intense anxiety despite cognitively knowing I was in no imminent danger. A dear lifelong friend had mentioned to me a particular yoga studio which I should attend, and after many weeks of insomnia, I started attending classes at Yoga Home of Therapeutics.
One of the topics that will come up frequently for many of my patients or Reiki clients is what to do or where to go once they begin to question life, and what steps to take to heal and grow has a human.
I’m going to post several resources I use, as well as books I’ve read that hopefully can help others wondering where to start.
The healing modalities I am most familiar with are traditional allopathic medicine, Reiki and Yoga. I will reference those I am familiar with. On occasion, I will recommend patients and clients to try one of these healing modalities as I am familiar with these.
Part of a healing journey is continued learning. I plan on updating this list frequently.
IARP is a wonderful starting resource for those seeking a Reiki Practitioner as well as for Reiki Practitioners looking for support for their practice. This website has information for those considering receiving Reiki such as this link. There is also research information on applications of Reiki in Healthcare, one of my favorite resources. Reiki Practioners will find that membership is very affordable, and there is an exciting new affiliate program you may consider, have a closer look here.
This website is better if you already have started or will be pursuing your Reiki training. There are many Reiki lineages, but the Usui lineage that many of us learn was founded by William Lee Rand is found here. One of my favorite activities is the World Peace Meditation. The link will take you to a PDF that describes what the World Peace Meditation is, as well as crystal grids that can be used to aid in your meditation experience. The World Peace Meditation takes place every month. I usually try to post a reminder when I receive the reminder as well.
This is a great website for experienced Reiki practitioners as well as those that are interested in learning more about Reiki. I highly recommend signing up for the newsletter if you are a Reiki practitioner. In addition to the wonderful articles, there are frequently many free ebooks with so much useful information.
Online directory to locate a Reiki Practitioner near you. If you are a Reiki practitioner, this a a great website to find online resources and grow your Reiki business.
Your local yoga studio is one of the best places to start. I will always recommend for any new student in yoga to try a local studio first. If you have a friend that can recommend a yoga studio that’s a great place to start. If you don’t live near a yoga studio, starting a home practice is easy. You can easily purchase a mat, a couple of yoga blocks, and a yoga strap (all can easily be found in most stores that have work out equipment).
Online paid membership site with several yoga courses that are appropriate for beginners. In addition to beginner’s yoga classes, there are many guided meditations. Membership is reasonably priced, and access is easy.
Online paid membership website that focuses on yoga. There are many wonderful articles that can take you deeper into your yoga practice as well as guide you in a Yogic lifestyle.
Books are a wonderful resource if you are wanting to dig deeper into your healing journey. There are a large number of books covering chakras, yoga, meditation, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, crystal and essential oils. I am an avid reader, but I understand that many people do not have the luxury of time to endlessly explore books in order to make progress in their healing. I have started a reading list with books that may be a good place for you to start. Please see the link on my blog page. According to researchers, suffering from asthma or hay fever may put you at an increased risk of developing a psychiatric disorder. The study reports over a 15 year period, 10.8% of people with allergies developed psychiatric disorders, compare to 6.7% of people without allergic diseases.
This article appeared in my feed and I find it very fascinating. I thought I might use this in my own blog as a way to start introducing the logistics of the Mind-Body Connection.
Pathophysiology of Allergies (Allergic Rhinitis)
I see patients with some form of allergies throughout most of the day. This should be no surprise since allergic rhinitis is “the most common chronic disease in the United States, affect[ing] between 10 and 30% of adults and up to 40% of children”¹.
The symptoms of allergic rhinitis start at Mast Cells;
Mast Cells are an important part of the immune system that also play a role in allergies. Mast Cells are equipped with receptors for antigens (a signal to the immune system that an invader is within the body). Someone that has allergies produces antibodies (IgE) which function to tag antigens as they enter the body. An antigen tagged with IgE circulating in the blood stream will land on a mast cell, causing the mast cell to launch its weapons (histamine, cytokines and other inflammatory chemicals), These chemicals will land in the nasal passage, sinuses, and lungs leading to allergy symptoms.
Energy Imbalance leading to Allergic Rhinitis
One of my favorite books is by Margaret Ann Lembo’s Chakra Awakening. This is one of the first books I read when I became curious about energy medicine. This is a wonderful starter for anyone who is wanting to learn about the Chakra system, and as well as using essential oils and crystals as part of their healing routine. I have adapted a chart from her book which summarizes each Chakra’s function, and how imbalances show up. I use this chart personally when I’m working with energy medicine and for myself and find it to be a very handy tool in energy medicine.
When I first started learning about the Chakra system, I was fascinated with how blockages within a Chakra could contribute to disease. Chakras comes from Ayurveda, and I think of it as anatomical representation of energy centers within the body.

Most people suffer allergies in their noses, sinuses, eyes, ears, throat and sometimes chest. Symptoms of allergies are usually runny nose, watery eyes, sore throat, sinus pain and pressure. These organs are within the throat, third eye, and crown chakra. These organ are also associated with psychological dysfunction, such as stress, anxiety, or depression. Additionally, allergies are generated within the body when the immune system becomes overactive. Knowing that these energy centers correlate with our physical and emotional health, it would be expected that a person suffering from allergies is likely at increased risk of a psychological issues. In particular, if an individual is feeling like they can’t express themselves (blocked throat chakra) they may be particularly prone to allergies.
There are a number of ways to handle allergies.
Over the Counter Medications:
Naturally I’ll have to remind readers to consult with their personal physician if you are suffering from allergies. Most people can tolerate antihistamines such as Claritin, Zyrtec, or Allegra very well. The addition of a nasal steroid such as Fluticasone (Flonase) can also help to control symptoms.
Anyone suffering from severe symptoms, such as a rash or wheezing needs to consult with their physician.
Reiki for Allergies:
If you are already Reiki attuned, you can simply treat your sinuses. Consider treating the neck and chest. Your Reiki manual from your attunement is also a good resource for a treatment sequence.
If you are considering seeking Reiki to treat allergies, you may opt for a shorter session, but understanding that a combination of stress and chemical cascades are leading to your symptoms, you may be due for a full Reiki session.
Essential Oils to use:
Anyone with experience using essential oils to support their health can attest to how wonderful they can be to relieve symptoms. There is simply no better pleasure than your first whiff of Breath from DoTerra when your suffering from allergies.
DoTerra offers a wonderful line of products that can be used for allergies, and are good for colds, or to augment your meditation. The essential oil comes in a 15ml or a roller bottle, and either one is excellent. A drop or two on your chest of neck quickly alleviates symptoms. Consider a patch test on your inner arm before using routinely. Of course, Breathe is amazing in a diffuser.
The vapor stick is neat, clean and ready to go. You can quickly apply some to you chest or neck to soothe your sinuses.
The dōTERRA Breathe® Respiratory Drops are my personal favorite cough drops. You get all of the benefits of the oils without concern of others being affects by your essential oil use. You will still get the cooling sensation in your sinus passages that is wonderful.

If you have chosen to pursue Reiki as a treatment likely your Reiki Practitioner has advised you on how to prepare. If you are still wondering if you should try it, I would like to address what to happens before, during, and after a Reiki session.
The day of your appointment, you’ll want to wear comfortable clothing. Similar to having a massage, it is usually best to wear something you’ll be comfortable laying down in for about an hour. I recommend carrying water with you. Your Reiki healer likely will have refreshments but it’s good to have something for your trip home. Because you’ll be laying down for several minutes, I would avoid eating a heavy meal.
Reiki Practitioners are very accomodating, so you have have special circumstances, you only need to let your practitioner know. In my clinic, we can accomodate for someone in a wheelchair or who has physical limitations that won’t let them lie on a table.
Once you arrive, you’ll be shown to the space you’ll receive your treatment. We use an exam room in my clinic that’s quieter than our other spaces.
The first few minutes I like to have clients complete a form that I can use for record the visit. I also like to talk for a few minutes prior to starting. One of the things I love with Reiki is that clients do not need to reveal more than they are comfortable with sharing. The treatment is intuitive, and even if a client wants to share nothing with me, I can still treat them effectively. I found in my years of practice, many patients have been traumatized by the healthcare system. Sometimes simply reviewing the timeline and details of an illness can be traumatizing in itself. We can proceed with a Reiki session with a lot of information or none at all.
Reiki can be channeled with direct touch or by simply hovering the hands over the area. This depends on what the client is most comfortable with. Depending on life experience, many people are not comfortable being touched and this is perfectly fine. Reiki is effective hands on or hands off.
Once the session begins, the practitioner will position their hands over an area of the body and leave them there for at least a few minutes.
My experience with with patients and clients is that throughout the session, the person will become progressively more relaxed. Some enter a meditative state. Most are deeply relaxed with very little tension in their bodies. Some clients will have a release of pent up emotions, so may feel a need to cry or even laugh. But every experience is individual. The same person may have a different experience with each Reiki session.
Once the session is complete, I like to let clients have a few minutes of quiet to center themselves. After the session, if the client likes, we can discuss their experience.
I typically advise everyone after a session to try not to schedule any rigorous activities. If you have things you must accomplish, try to plan so that you don’t have to do too much as you’ll need to rest.
I hope this description is helpful for anyone considering this healing modality. I hope you’ll try it if you haven’t. If you have already experienced Reiki, you should continue, and maybe become healer.

The idea is that if many of us meditate, we create a healing wave of energy that travels the planet. The meditation requires only 15 minutes of your time, and you’ll personally feel the wave of energy.
In my previous post, I covered an introduction to Reiki and the role of the practitioner as the focuser of Reiki. What is Reiki?
My description is to provide a framework for those that are not familiar with this healing modality. I anticipate that many readers searching about Reiki online may already be familiar with its wonderful energies. For those readers, thank you so much for visiting, and feel free to contribute in the comments on what Reiki is.
In my first post, Introduction to Reiki, I use examples from science that most of us are familiar with. Heat energy travels a certain distance, is perceived by our bodies as “hot”, can be visualized with infrared technology, and has a source. The heat source can be many objects, the sun, a hot plate, or a microwave.
Reiki, like x-rays, gamma rays, or ultraviolet rays, also has a source. One of the most powerful aspects or Reiki is the source.
The work Reiki comes from Japenese Kanji (symbols used in communication) which are “Rei” and “Ki”. “Rei” translates to Spiritual Wisdom and “Ki” translates to “Life Energy”¹.
Acceptance of the “Rei” in Reiki can be the biggest hurdle for anyone that is skeptical. If you have a spiritual practice, the Rei is simply originating from a deity, such as God, Buddha or Allah. The Rei can also come from Mother Earth or any spirit guide that holds strong meaning for that person (please recall this list is not all inconclusive, and I welcome any additions in comments). It is important to note that the “Rei” applies to atheist. An atheist may feel most comfortable with identifying the “Higher Self” as the spiritual wisdom. Because the source of the energy is from something higher than mankind, with only loving intentions is why Reiki is only able to bring good and healing.
“Ki”, of “Life Energy” is often compared to Prana in Hinduism (and Yoga) or the Holy Ghost in Christianity². This is the hum of life. The beating of your heart, or the flow of energy. We all have a sense of flow. Most of us notice it as health, simply feeling well, moving through life with little resistance. Yogis, those that practice Yoga, identify this as Prana, and use asana (yoga postures) to help move Prana that has been blocked. Acupuncturist use Traditional Chinese Medicine and needles to unblock Chi. In anatomy, students notice within a few lessons that every region of the human body is supplied by a neurovascular bundle, and often learn the mnemonic NAV (Nerve-artery-vein). Where there is blood flow, the blood must drain, and a nerve helps that area to operate. In a heart attack, an artery becomes blocked. This causes chest pain (through the nerves that sense pain), and must be unblocked by a cardiologist by using stents.
In addition to being an energy, due to the divine nature of the source, Reiki heals at all levels because its guided by forces wiser than humans. Reiki is simply facilitated by the human touch, but Reiki will heal the receiver at all levels, including molecular, physical, mental, and emotional. Because of this, Reiki is not limited to the here and now. Reiki can heal in the present, the past or the future. However, if you’re just now learning about Reiki, we should stay in the present for now.

In my previous post, I discussed the energy of Reiki. I plan to get deeper into that later on, but its important to discuss channeling as this topic is likely to make most people considering Reiki for the first time uncomfortable.
I covered the various nature of energy. Reiki is energy at a healing frequency. We as humans require energy to be channeled. Although we are surrounded by energy, its most efficient when its gathered, focused, and aimed in a direction.
One example of this, of course, is sound energy. When you are using your cell phone, you can put the cell phone up to your ear. The sound quality doing this is good. You can also use your speaker. The speaker will deliver sound, but it may be hard to hear very clearly if there is a lot of background noise. The best sound quality is using your headphones. The headphones focus the sound energy, block out outside noise, and therefore deliver the highest quality sound making your conversation easier.
The role of the Reiki practioner is to focus and deliver channeling energy. The Reiki practioner operates best as a speaker, or focuser of this healing energy. The very nature of Reiki does allow for the practioner to receive some of the healing energy (I like to think of this as a spill over) while aiming this energy for the best effect.
Anyone that is into metaphysics already may have concerns about this energy being able to do something other than healing. The nature of the Reiki practioner as well as Reiki energy does not allow for any transmission of energy that does not lead to healing and only serves the highest good of the person receiving Reiki.
In healthcare, we already use enery delivery to treat disease. On the other end of the spectrum, radiation treatment used in cancer care also requires something to focus high energy into an area of the body. However, this energy is used specifically to shrink cancer (this is only a comparison, not to be taken that Reiki can replace current treatment, please follow your physicians treatment plans as always).

I first learned about Reiki from Sara Alavi at Yoga Home of Therapeutics . Sara has taught me so much over the years and I’m so grateful to her.
I initially knew very little of Reiki. I had taken an interest in Yoga and eventually completed my 200 hour certification to be a Yoga Instructor. It was through yoga that I had my first experience with awareness of energy in the human body and how it could effect the physical body.
The fundamental purpose of Reiki is to channel high frequency energy into the body to encourage the body to heal itself.
Reiki is channeled energy. We are surrounded by energy. The simplest example is heat energy from the sun, which we feel on our skin. Another form of energy is infrared energy, which is used in remotes and many home devices, exists at a freqency that we can’t see or feel, but we do see the effects:
X-ray energy, used in radiology to take x-rays and at airports to look into bags, exists at an even higher frequency. We don’t see these wavelengths as our eyes are not tuned to operate at those frequencies.
We can see Visible Light, which is a very small part of the energy spectrum. Here is an example from NASA:
Energy can often be seen, such as the energy in the visible light spectrum, but as most of us are aware, our human sense do not typically allow us to feel energy that moves at a higher or lower frequency but we do see the effects. The higher the frequency of the energy, the higher its ability to penetrate solid matter is. You’ll notice on each graphic the height of the energy wave corresponds to a physical object, such as a hair, an atom, or a soap bubble.
Reiki is believed to channel energy that exists at a high frequency. Now that we’ve covered how energy is the nature of Reiki, in future post, I’d like to delve into what it means to channel Reiki and how fundamentally this is how Reiki leads to body healing itself.
